Kids Jiu-Jitsu Classes

If you’re looking for an extra-curricular program for your child that builds resilience, discipline and confidence, you’ve found the right place! Our Kids program is perfect for any child who is starting or continuing their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey.

We teach classes in four age groups:

  • Little Nippers (4 years)

  • Nippers (5-6 years)

  • Grommets (7-10 years)

  • Titans (11 to 15 years)

Why Jiu-Jitsu is the best martial art for your child

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is far more practical than traditional martial arts such as taekwondo or karate, as it teaches children to defend themselves from the ground, without the use of striking. Size and strength are less relevant in BJJ, giving smaller and/or weaker children the tools to stay safe and defend themselves. Read more about why your child should do Jiu-Jitsu over other martial arts here.

Class Structure

As Pedro Sauer Association affiliate, we follow a curriculum which ensures that the skills and experience required to progress in the sport is gained by each kid in class, without being held back by others. We keep track of class attendance and skills gained in our member platform, which ensures that the opportunity to hand out stripes and coloured belts is not missed! Read about the benefits of curriculum-based learning in jiu-jitsu.

Each class consists of physical exercise, self-defence techniques and education on the art of Jiu-Jitsu. Your child will grow in their coordination, agility, mobility and flexibility. We will become a safe place for your child to get active, build self-discipline, respect authority and learn to defend themselves, in a group class with kids of a similar age. It’s amazing to see the bonds that are formed between kids as they grow up together on the mats!

A typical 30 minute Little Nippers (4 years) and Nippers (5-6 years) class includes:

  • Warm-up: Jiu-Jitsu inspired movements and drills to help them warm up and prepare the body for training.

  • Techniques: Both standing and ground grappling techniques that are essential for self-defence, including takedowns, sweeps and escapes.

  • Games: We introduce Nippers to the art of Jiu-Jitsu through fun games that they can also play at home with parents, siblings and friends.

A typical 45 minute Grommets (7-10 years) and Titans (11-15 years) class includes:

  • Warm-ups and games: Jiu-Jitsu inspired movements and drills to help them warm up and prepare the body for training.

  • Techniques: Both standing and ground grappling techniques essential for self-defence. These include takedowns, sweeps, escapes, and submission holds.

  • Drilling: Practising the techniques with increasing resistance from their training partner.

  • Sparring: Carefully supervised grappling, with no strikes involved.

Girls and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

We chatted with Mia, who was our first female member at NBJJA. Despite being surrounded by boys for the first few months of training, Mia stuck at it and can definitely hold her own in each class (and against her brother!).

The number of females in each class is rapidly growing, as parents are realising the importance of building confident, resilient and empowered young women - all skills taught through Jiu-Jitsu.

Our goal is to have a 50/50 male to female split. We continue to encourage girls to try and continue with BJJ, especially since the foundation of the Pedro Sauer curriculum we follow is based on self defence - an invaluable life skill.

Using Martial Arts to help with bullying at school

Bullying is unfortunately too common in schools, which is why many parents are looking for options to address it. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become a practical and advanced self-defence art and an increasingly popular solution for kids who are being bullied.

Unlike other martial arts that teach primarily striking to defend one’s self, Jiu-Jitsu teaches how to deescalate and if needed, gain an advantageous position to protect yourself and minimise injury - even to the alleged bully. We teach children proper self-defence techniques and simple, yet effective, techniques to defuse a potential bully, regardless of their size and strength.

By enrolling your child in our Academy, you can be reassured they will learn proper techniques to stand up against a bully where required, and have the confidence to stand up for themselves. We stand against bullying and stand up for our students.

Not sure if they’ll like Jiu-Jitsu? Book a free trial class and see!

We have two kids of our own, and understand how tricky it is to find a sport they love and will commit to. That’s why we offer a free, no-obligation trial class for your child(ren) to come along and see if they like the sport, and more importantly - like our Academy! We really hope they do, as we have seen first hand the growth and confidence that builds in kids who stick with Jiu-Jitsu. All uniforms are provided for the trial class - you just need to book it in below, and arrive 10 minutes early so we can get you all set up.
