5 reasons women should train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we have listed 5 Reasons Why All Women Should Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!
1. Self-Defence:
Most women discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) because of an interest in learning to defend themselves. The skills you acquire from training BJJ enable a smaller and weaker person with the ability to protect themselves against a larger, more powerful attacker.
You do not need to be fast, strong, or explosive to perform BJJ techniques effectively (which is not true of other self-defence systems that rely on punches and kicks.) Through the use of leverage and superior body positioning, you can use BJJ to control, escape from and possibly defeat a physically superior attacker.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will not only teach you how to defend yourself; it will empower you!
2. Discover a great way to burn off steam and relieve stress:
I have students tell me all the time that they were having a bad day and that BJJ solved that problem. After learning new techniques, training with some friends, and breaking a sweat, they went home happy.
The benefits go beyond that. Scientific research has found that moderate-to-intense activity, led by an instructor who makes sure you see it through to completion, has significant mental benefits, including the easing or possible protection against depression. Many people have used BJJ to deal with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health problems.
3. Appreciate your body for what it can do instead of what it looks like:
Media and popular culture bombard women with unrealistic and unhealthy standards of beauty. In BJJ, all that matters is that you did the technique effectively. Who you are and what you look like is irrelevant. BJJ will enable you to fully express yourself physically and use your body to its full potential.
4. Build a social network of positive friends:
Many of us try and live what is known as the "Jiu-Jitsu Lifestyle", but what does that mean?
To live your life around jiu-jitsu means to continually seek improvement of your body, mind, and spirit.
When you join the BJJ community, you are instantly surrounded by friends who share similar goals and are looking out for your best interests; if one member grows, in turn, we all grow. BJJ has a unique way of creating bonds of friendship that last a lifetime.
5. Gain the confidence to handle life’s stressful situations:
Once you begin to train BJJ and gain experience in dealing with its physical and mental challenges, it is common to feel more composed and in control of stressful situations off the mats. BJJ teaches you to control your breathing, suppress your fight-or-flight instinct, and calm your emotions.
These same skills can be transferred to a stressful day at work, school, or home, allowing you to keep your cool under pressure. What’s a simple job interview or a nagging coworker compared to a BJJ sparring match?
