8 reasons ALL adults should train Jiu-Jitsu

If you’re looking for a new sport that has both physical and mental health benefits, then getting into some kind of martial art is the answer. ALL martial arts have such incredible benefits for the mind and body, not to mention the positive social impact too. However, there are so many different martial arts on offer (see Martial Arts 101) that it’s tricky to know which one is best. So we’ll save you the research…..

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, of course! We know we’re biased, but there are so many great reasons why both men and women should train Jiu-Jitsu over other martial arts:

  1. It is the best style for self defence, and therefore has very real and practical applications in the real world (especially when BJJ is trained no-gi). In a self defence scenario, using the principles of timing, angles, leverage and pressure o control an opponent instead of striking and force, means everyone will stay safer until proper help arrives. It is also the reason we have so many people train with us who are in high risk professions including the police force, paramedics and nurses.

  2. Without striking, there are fewer opportunities for injury or concussion. Jiu-Jitsu players are taught to tap when they want out, forcing them to listen to their body, acknowledge their limitations and keep their ego in check. You can’t tap out of a fly kick to the head, which you might find in other martial arts!

  3. It is for people of all shapes and sizes. At NBJJA we have adult members from 45kgs to 145kgs, and from 150cm to 190cm. You roll with everyone, and will learn to think on the fly to use different strategies to adjust to each body type. In other martial arts, size is everything, and no matter how hard you train, you might never be able to overcome the size and strength of another person.

  4. You’ll train your body as well as your brain. If you switch off in Jiu-Jitsu, you won’t get far. There’s no rote learning or repetitive punching of bags - each class requires you to listen, learn, try, adjust, retry, practice…and repeat. It’s a different kind of mental stimulation, teaching the brain about focus, noise minimisation and concentration - skill we need to practise every day.

  5. Speaking of your body, you’ll get a great physical workout literally from head to toe. All parts of your body are activated to control an opponent, and both your core and cardio will be challenged, building up strength and fitness. Other martial arts focus on a specific part of the body more than others, but BJJ trains it all.

  6. When you step on the mats, you’ll need to forget about everything else going on in life and focus 100% on the task at hand. That’s why so many adults train Jiu-Jitsu as a circuit breaker, a release, and a change of pace from the usual chaos of life. It’s time for yourself, and when you make time to train each week, you reap the mental health benefits.

  7. It’s great for goal setting. Through the Jiu-Jitsu grading system, the awarding of stripes and coloured belts makes it very clear where you rank in the sport and how well you’re progressing. It’s a great acknowledgement of your hard work and commitment, and is perfect to set both long and short term goals.

  8. You’ll join part of a supportive and open-minded local community. We know this is true of many martial arts academies, but Jiu-Jitsu wins overall because it is also the most FUN!

At NBJJA, we focus on the lifestyle-side of Jiu-Jitsu rather than competition. This allows us to focus on what matters most to us - building a strong local community of physically and mentally fit humans, who support and uplift each other. We achieve this through running lots of social events, ensuring there are zero politics hindering our enjoyment of the sport, and by creating a fun, positive culture within our Academy in Cromer. If this sounds like what you’re after, we’d love to meet you!
