How to tie a Jiu-Jitsu belt

“Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime”

We get asked every day how to tie a Jiu-Jitsu belt, so we thought we'd make a video to show you. Not quite feeding you for a lifetime, but certainly helps make things easier on the mats!

There are a many ways to tie your belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but this method is simple and quick. No fancy Boy Scout or Girl Guide knot tying skills required.

Follow along with Coach Jack in this video, and contact us if you have any questions or are still unsure.

  • STEP 1: Fold your belt to find the half way point, and put the fold on your belly button

  • STEP 2: Cross the belt behind your back, and hold both ends out to your side

  • STEP 3: Take one end and cross it over the top of the other. Wrap this end under all parts of the belt and bring it out the top - a bit like the first part of tying your shoelaces. Pull tight.

  • STEP 4: Cross the top end of the belt over the top of the bottom part of the belt, and reach for it through the gap.

  • STEP 5: Pull it tight and you’re done!
