2022 CAMP OVERVIEW

  • See breakdown below for more details on each day

  • Location: Northern Beaches Jiu-Jitsu Academy, 6/21 Orlando Rd Cromer (MAP)

  • Coaches:

    • Phil Grapsas (PG) - Leverage Jiu-Jitsu, Melbourne

    • Cam Sobes (CS) - Leverage Jiu-Jitsu, Melbourne

    • John Smallios (JS) - Higher Jiu-Jitsu, Sydney

    • Jack Cox (JC) - Northern Beaches Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Sydney

  • Transport: We have 2 x mini vans to transport people around during the camp, plus many people who have cars with extra seats. Transport to/from activities will be arranged the day before each activity via the WhatsApp group, as we know numbers will change. If you are driving, there is no parking within the complex - please park on the surrounding streets.

  • Weather: If weather stops any event from happening, alternate plans will be made. This will probably involved extra rolling time at NBJJA.

  • Open mat: When the mats aren’t being used for the camp or regular classes (Thurs 4-5.30pm, Fri 4-5.30pm and Sat 8.30-10.30am), you’re welcome to come in and train. Please call/text Jack on 0420 344 535 so he can open the Academy for you.

  • Coffee: A few of our favourite local coffee + food spots are Barrel One in Cromer (10 minute walk from NBJJA), Stay Grounded at Collaroy Beach and Drip Coffee Traders at Collaroy Plateau. Heading North, we love Zubis at Narrabeen (coffee only), Sunrise Kiosk at Warriewood Beach and Armchair Collective, Mona Vale Beach. South of NBJJA, try Girdlers at Dee Why Beach, the Split Coffee Van at North Curl Curl and a takeaway from Pilu on Freshwater Beach.

  • Contacts: If you need anything, call Jack or Gill from NBJJA or John from HJJ:

    • Jack Cox - 0420 9344 535

    • Gill Cox - 0420 988 420

    • John Smallios - 0415 644 011

The welcome + first seminar is with Jack Cox

THURSDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2022

  • Morning: Travel time and arrival

  • 12pm: Camp kick off and welcome (Location: NBJJA)

  • 12pm to 2pm: Seminar 1 with Jack Cox (Location: NBJJA)

  • Afternoon: FREE TIME (see notes)

  • 6pm to 8pm: Seminar 2 with Cam Sobes (Location: NBJJA)

  • 8pm onwards: Dinner (see notes) POC: Jack Cox.

NOTES

  • Free time recommendations: Take a ‘refreshing’ dip at out any of the beautiful nearby beaches or ocean pools (our favourite is North Narrabeen), check out the incredible 360’ views from Long Reef Headland, grab a drink at the brand new Surf Deck right on Collaroy Beach or have an arvo nap in preparation for a few big days ahead.

  • Dinner is free choice, however an easy option is the Time and Tide (map), a short walk from the Academy. Google describes it as a ‘no frills’ spot with casual, pub style dining and a lively bar. Nothing fancy, but it’s very close and will still be open after the seminar finishes!

Post seminar pizza for the win

FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2022

  • 8am to 11am: Palm Beach Adventure. Pick ups in the mini bus between 8am-8.15am (organised via WhatsApp) OR 8.45am at the parking lot at Palm Beach if you’re driving (on Station Beach here). POC: Jack + Gill Cox

  • 12pm to 2pm: Seminar 3 with John Smallios (Location: NBJJA)

  • Afternoon: FREE TIME

  • 6pm to 8pm: Seminar 4 with Cam Sobes (Location: NBJJA)

  • 8pm onwards: Pizza dinner provided at NBJJA POC: Gill Cox

NOTES

  • Palm Beach Adventure: The walk up to the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a short, steep 15 to 20 minute walk. There’s also an easier option that is flatter, but longer. All fitness levels can handle it! Wear joggers and pack water and suncream in case it’s hot. There are beautiful views from the top across the whole of Sydney. You can also pack swimmers if you want a swim, and a surfboard if you have one. We’ll make sure there’s time to grab a coffee and breaky while we’re there. Pack your Gi as we may go straight to the Academy for the 12pm Seminar, depending on timing.

  • We’ve got everyone’s dietary needs from the booking form, but if you have any preferences or additional needs just email gillian@northernbeachesjiujitsu.com.au as I’ll be placing the order on Friday night.

NOTES

  • Surfing - how to book: Tell Gill or John, or just email gillian@northernbeachesjiujitsu.com.au if you’re keen on the 1.5 hour surf lesson (all experience levels welcome) so Manly Surf School can organise the right number of coaches. Cost is $65 pp (incl. board, wetty) which can be paid directly to Manly Surf School on the day. Bring swimmers, a towel and warm clothes to change into.

  • Alternate options to surfing: You’re welcome to jump in the mini van and come along to check out Manly Beach. Please let Gill / John know so we can coordinate pick ups. There are a few avid surfers on the WhatsApp group chat, so if you can find a board of your own message the WhatsApp group to find out which beach is best. Or, grab a takeaway coffee and a croissant/sausage roll/cronut (it’s all amazing) at Mrs Jones The Baker (MAP) then wander down and enjoy it on Freshwater Beach (MAP).

  • Kiss My Axe: If you’ve already booked and paid, you’re ready to go! If you decide last minute you want to join, email/text Gill so she can increase booking size. If you have a Parents NSW voucher, bring it along and you’ll only be charged $10. If not, it’s $60 for a very memorable experience! Wear whatever you like but you must have enclosed shoes. There is a licensed bar at the venue.

  • Alternate option to KMA - brewery tour: KMA is within walking distance of our dinner venue (4 Pines Truck Bar) and heaps of other micro breweries. Check them out on your own walking brewery tour - we’ll meet at 5pm at Bucketty’s Brewing Co (MAP) and can check out others such as Dad and Dave’s Brewing (MAP), 7th Day Brewery (MAP) and Nomad Brewing Co (MAP).

  • Dinner - 4 Pines Truck Bar: Meet there from 7.30pm - we have the whole mezzanine area reserved. We’ll supply a bunch of pre-dinner nibbles, and you can order your own mains and drinks whenever you’re hungry or thirsty. We expect everyone will be in all different places by Saturday afternoon, so will revert to the WhatsApp group to organise transport where required.

SUNDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2022

The main card is broadcast on ESPN from 5am local time, but we’ll have it on the big TV at NBJJA from around 6am - we’ll confirm this closer to the time.
